The painter revisits the exact scene of the ancient port of Brunei Darussalam where the modern wharfs at its capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, currently reside. This location was known as ‘Labohan Kapal’ during ancient times, where trades and merchant ships were moored. This piece depicts a lively sunset scene at Labohan Kapal.

This painting depicts the history of Brunei in the 1850s during the first arrival of the Spaniards in Brunei during their religious and trade missions. The intent of the Spanish Armada to Christianise the Muslim population was opposed by the Bruneian fleet during a sea battle called ‘Perang Kastila’.
